The Hopkins varsity football team racked up six touchdowns Thursday night en route to a high-scoring 42-30 victory over visiting nonleague opponent Ravenna.
The Vikings cruised to a 42-16 advantage in the fourth quarter, but then had to hang on to survive a furious rally.
Hopkins posted a 14-8 advantage in the opening period on a three-yard run by junior running back Carsen DeLao and an eight-yard TD pass from quarterback Nolan Smith to Hunter Lewellyn.
The Bulldogs scored in the first quarter on a 72-yard pass from quarterback Connor Kilbourne to Trevor Sterken and ran in a two-point conversion.
The Vikings mounted a 21-8 lead at intermission after back Zack Szubinski scored from four yards out.
Perhaps the most electric play of the evening was a school-record TD strike from Smith to Lewellyn that put the home team up 28-8. Lewellyn shortly afterward came up with an intercepted pass on defense.
Smith wedged over the goal line from a yard out early in the fourth period and then he hit Drew Weber with a 20-yard scoring strike to close out the scoring for Hopkins. And even better news was that Josh Glascott kicked all six of his extra point attempts successfully.
But Ravenna still put up a battle at the end, with Kilbourne scoring twice from two yards out in the final period.
Smith ended the evening with an eye-popping three touchdown passes, one rushing, and 229 yards in passing.
The Vikings will travel to Olivet to play their second game of the season next Thursday evening.
