Hopkins captured the Division 4 district basketball championship Saturday evening the old-fashioned way — by earning it.
The Vikings Tuesday determinedly got the best of a Hasting team they had lost to last month, then scored a 62-61 upset over tourney favorite Otsego Thursday.
They finished the job in the finals with a nail-biting 51-49 decision over Wayland to take home the hardware.
It was Hopkins’ first district title since 2002.
The Vikings, now 10-7 on the season overall, will move on the regional tournament  at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Benton Harbor and face Parchment (14-3). Wayland ended its season at 3-11.
