It isn’t often when Hopkins gets the best of perennial O-K Silver Conference boys’ basketball powerhouse Wyoming Godwin Heights. But it happened Friday night, and coach Jake Jewett said it may be a first.

The Vikings won 66-59 to lift their season record to 4-3 overall. The Lady Vikings, meanwhile, also moved to 4-3 with a 54-46 triumph earlier in the evening.

“This is the first win for us over Godwin in a very long time, maybe ever,” Jewett said. “We’ve been close with them the past few times and finished the job tonight. I’m proud of our resilience and ability to play through their pressure by playing together. This was a program win for us tonight.”

Hopkins ended Godwin’s 53-game league winning streak dating back to 2015.

Colin Weber led the team with his best game yet, scoring 25 points and dishing out several key assists. “He also played great defense on Godwin’s top shooter, Jakhary Towns, especially in the second half,” Jewett said.

Brother Drew Weber and Tyler Zomerlei both finished with 14 points. Trevor Smith added 9.

The Hopkins Lady Vikings beat Godwin in the first game on the O-K Silver Conference schedule.

Coach Tim Hoogewind said after building a 20-point lead in the third quarter, Hopkins held off a pesky Wolverine defense through the fourth quarter. Freshman Mady Weber led the Vikings with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Olivia Sebright finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

Hopkins ladies will play at Calvin Christian next Tuesday while the boys’ squad will be on the home floor to entertain the Squires.
