Undefeated Montague handed Hopkins its sixth consecutive loss on the gridiron Friday evening, 42-18.

The Wildcats, now 7-0 for the season overall, scored two touchdowns through the air in the first quarter and added three TDs in the second period to mount a 35-12 advantage at intermission. They cruised the rest of the way.

Montague’s first two six-pointers came on a six-yard pass from QB Jacob Buchberger to Zachary VanVleet and a five-yard strike from Buchberger to Eddie Caviedes, who kicked two of his six extra points before the second quarter started.

Michael Smith wedged over the goal line in the first quarter from yard out and junior back Cyrus Miner scored on a two-yard run early in the second period to bring the Vikings to within two points, 14-12, but the homestanding Wildcats did almost all the scoring after that.

Buchberger went 80 yards to pay dirt with the kickoff after Miner’s TD, scored on an 18-yard scamper and then tossed a 16-yard TD pass to VanVliet with just nine seconds remaining in the half.

Buchberger fired a 54-yard scoring strike to VanVliet in the third period to finish the evening with four touchdown passes against a Hopkins defense that has struggled against the pass all season.

The loss lowered the Vikings’ overall season record to 1-6. They haven’t won since taking a 34-28 decision from Wayland in the season opener.
