The Wayland City Planning Commission Tuesday night approved a zoning text amendment and gave conditional site plan approval for Village Green Apartments on Oak Street.

The zoning text amendment, which now will be sent to the City Council for final action, calls for reducing square footage requirements for each apartment unit. It was pointed out that the action was in compliance with the city’s master plan and it is consistent with standards in nearby communities.

Site plan approval at first didn’t seem to be in the works until Chairman JD Gonzales, in a rare move, moved to give its blessing only if the site plan conformed with conditions set for drainage and police and fire safety.

Developer David Stebbins and engineer Mike Baker of Redstone Land Development said the the biggest change in proposed site plan was removal of one of the three buildings planned at the complex.

Also in the virtual meeting, City Manager Josh Eggleston told commissioners there has been no movement recently on the proposed annexation of a strip on the west side of U.S.-131 and on any marijuana businesses because the Covid-19 viral pandemic has denied the ability to have public, in-person meetings.
