Visitation is Monday for veteran Daniel Herrington

Daniel Herrington of Plainwell, died Monday, April 24, at the age of 81.

He was born on Aug. 29, 1941 in Kalamazoo, the son of Bernard and Luella (Kebert) Herrington. He grew up in Alamo and moved to Gun Lake around the age of 9 and graduated from Delton High School.

Growing up in the Gun Lake area he developed a love for water skiing on the lake, hunting in the woods, and snow skiing at Timber Ridge. He loved everything to do with cars: shows, NASCAR races, stock car races, and working on them. He was skilled in woodworking, having built bassinets for all of his grandchildren.

He was drafted into the United States Army for the Vietnam Conflict in 1964. Serving honorably, he was discharged in 1970. When he returned home he began working for Checker Motors before moving on to become an iron worker for the local union until he retired in 2003. 

For the last 15 years he was an active member of the VFW Post 3030. He could be seen participating in the local parade, working the fish fry, serving on the honor guard for the funerals of other veterans, or helping wherever he was needed.

Surviving are his wife of 48 years: Barbara (Fitzpatrick) Herrington; children: Budd (Kimberly) Hybels and Brad (Aimee) Herrington; grandchildren: Alex and Emma Herrington, and Skyra, Grace, and Blake Hybels; sister: Sally (Clarence) Collison; and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Daniel is preceded in his passing by his parents and sister: Sherry Herrington.

In accordance with the family’s wishes, public visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 1, at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Homes, 120 South Woodhams St., Plainwell. Daniel then will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery of Orangeville Township, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2

Memorials made in Daniel’s memory may be directed to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3030.
