Martin High School graduate Mary Alice Quick died Sunday, Oct. 8, at Kauhale in Otsego. She was 78.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1945 to Robert and Alice “Lucille” (Orris) Porter in Gross Pointe Farms.

Mary Alice graduated from Martin High School in 1963 and began working at Upjohn as a lab technician and retired after more than 45 years of service.

She married Douglas Quick on April 27, 1985, at the Otsego Church of God, where she was a member and her local quilting club. In her free time she enjoyed volunteering her time tutoring underprivileged children in Kalamazoo.

Surviving are her brother, Bob (Mary Beth) Porter of Martin; nephew, Robert W. Porter; niece, Elizabeth (Scott) Maka of Shelbyville; many great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; her beloved dog, Daisey, and two step-children, Jeff Quick and Deb (Bud) Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Mary Alice was best known for her kind heart and love of her family. She was a selfless friend and always the first person to show up when you needed a hand. A warm smile and quiet strength, she never complained, even after her diagnosis of leukemia.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Private burial of ashes will be held at South Martin Cemetery.

Friends may visit with Mary Alice’s family from 12:30 to 3p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Otsego Church of God.
