Wayland administrators, secretaries get extensions

img_1395img_1392The Wayland Board of Education Monday night ratified a one-year extension of employment contracts for administrators and secretaries at one step and a 1% increase in pay.

All will receive the 80-20% ratio in contributions to the health care insurance package as well.

The Wayland Education Association, with 160 teachers, also ratified the very same one-year extension last month.

Meanwhile, the board agreed to rate Taylor as “effective” in his annual performance evaluation

The school board also agreed to pay a 15 cents and hour stipend to all secretaries for training in helping with student medical issues such as diabetes.

Superintendent Norm Taylor said the added pay is only for personnel who “are going above and beyond the typical things they do.”

Most of the business for the last board meeting of the year involved wrapping up business and preparing for next year. It was noted that representatives will be in Lansing Jan. 5 to officially submit its application for a $54 million bond issue in two proposals next May.

Finance and Operations Director Pat Velie told the board the district now stands at having a 10.29 percent fund balance, despite having customary cash flow difficulties because state aid payments didn’t start until October.

The board also approved middle school students’ field trip to Boston for next fall rather than spring, from a Monday morning until Friday. The middle schoolers had their first fall trip in 2016 and the board would like to make that a new tradition.

Board President Tom Salingue is glad-handed by Superintendent Norm Taylor after serving a four-year term. Just before gaveling down his last meeting, Salingue said, “I think this is a wonderful time to be in Wayland. I think we’re mobbing in the right direction.”
