The Wayland Farmers Market site has moved for the third time in three years, this time being situated next to the Henika Public Library.
The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays until September and Saturdays through October.
Market Master Jan Goodwin and other vendors sold their local produce and wares three years ago at the City Park, but then-Main Street Director Alicia Zylstra persuaded them to relocate to the small parking lot at the corner of West Superior and Church streets, across from the fire station.
The idea then was to make the Farmers Market a part of promoting the downtown with added commerce and interest.
However, after two years, vendors lost their enthusiasm for the site and new Main Street Director Ingrid Miller had to come up with a new idea.
“The parking lot across from the fire station gets pretty hot for the vendors, and the parking space was limited,” Miller told the City Council Monday night. “We believe the library location will be more vendor and customer friendly with the shade.”
The marketers will set up shop in the grassy area next to the library on South Main Street. Miller promised that the “sandwich signs” for the market will be employed at its old location and near the library.
The market actually started last Saturday, but Main Street officials had to wait until Thursday night’s Library Board meeting to get approval for using the new site, so it wasn’t well publicized.
It is expected that Tuesday’s market (June 16) will offer asparagus, strawberries, spinach and flowers.
Denise Cater, one customer from last Saturday, posted, “Stopped in and found some fantastic greens. Thank you! Love the new location as well.”
