It was not a good night on the gridiron for Wayland and Hopkins, both of whom were defeated handily in road contests.

It wasn’t even a good night for defending state champion Martin, which lost by a two-point conversion, 14-12, to Bridgman, a team it lost to last year by one point, 35-34.

Wayland, after turning in a promising 2-0 start, was handed a 42-7 loss by perennial O-K Gold Conference powerhouse Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

The Cougars wasted little time in mounting a 13-0 advantage early and extended it to 35-0 in the second half. They shut down an offense that put 49 points on the scoreboard the week before against Holland Christian.

Has the Hopkins football squad fallen on hard times?

It would appear so after a 46-0 shellacking at the hands of O-K Silver Conference contender Belding Friday night.

The Vikings have scored only seven points in their first three games while yielding 122. They have lost 40-7 to Wayland, 36-0 to Allendale and now 46-0 to Belding.

Hopkins’ streak off five consecutive post-season playoff appearances is in serious jeopardy, having to win at least five of its next six contests.

The Vikings will travel to Wyoming Godwin Heights next Friday evening.
