Wayland man killed when van collides with tree service truck

Howard Simmons, 80, of Wayland, was killed Thursday when the mini-van he was driving collided with a tree service bucket truck near the corner of Patterson Avenue and 108th Street in Caledonia Township.

Kent County sheriff’s authorities said Simmons had stopped his 2003 Pontiac Montana, on 108th Street for a stop sign at Patterson Avenue, but then pulled out into the path of the bucket truck driven by a 35-year-old Dorr man. The van was struck on the driver’s side door and both vehicles were then struck a utility pole.

Deputies said the bucket truck tipped over onto the van, causing live power lines to come down on both vehicles.

The Dorr man was not injured in the accident.
