Wayland native, longtime nurse Helen Hazen dies

Wayland native Helen M. Hazen, 92 of Marshall died Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Medilodge of Marshall.

Mrs. Hazen was born on Dec. 23, 1924, in Wayland to J. Franklin and Ruth (Jackson) Crofoot.  She graduated from Wayland High School and later would graduate from Bronson Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 as a registered nurse. On Dec. 28, 1951, she married Athol Hazen Jr. in Wayland.  He survives.

Mrs. Hazen worked as a registered nurse at Bronson Hospital, Borgess Hospital, for Dr. Chan and Dr, Boswell, at the Provincial House, and later would retire from Marshall Manor in 1986.

Mrs. Hazen was a member of the Golden Sheaf (50 year +) member of Fredonia Grange, Michigan Nature Association, and the Bronson Alumni Association. She enjoyed the outdoors, walking and looking at birds and wild flowers and reading.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Athol of Marshall; daughters Mary Lyke and Lois Hazen both of Florida; sons Leslie Hazen and Richard Hazen both of Marshall; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a sister Mary Lou Marcott of Gould City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother J. Robert Crofoot; and sisters Eunice Brown, Ruth Wobma, and infant sister Lois Crofoot.

A memorial service will take place at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26, at the Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Service Marshall 723 US-27 North with Jacob Washburn officiating.
