Wayland native Roger Morris dies at age 93

A celebration of life visitation for Wayland High School graduate Roger Frank Morris will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Morris, who died April 5, was 93.

Interment will take place at noon Monday, May 12, at Mt. Ever Rest Memorial Park South, 3941 South Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo. Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.  Military honors will take place concluding the visitation at 4 p.m. Saturday.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1931, in Wayland, the son of the late Frank Morris and Myrtle Smith. A Wayland High School graduate, Class of 1950, Roger developed a strong work ethic that served him well in his career. He worked as a journeyman and tool and die maker at GM Fisher Body UAW 488 in Kalamazoo, until his retirement.

Besides his professional accomplishments, Roger served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War, taking on the essential roles of medic and supply sergeant. 

Roger married Keitha Koopman on Sept. 20, 1952. Together, they started a family that included their children, Jacquelyn (Dennis) Templeton, Randall (Mary) Morris, and Valerie (Tim) Summers. Roger was not only a father but also a grandfather to nine grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 12 great-grandchildren.

Throughout the years, Roger’s spirit was reflected in his hobbies and interests. He was an avid bicyclist and enjoyed activities such as golfing, hiking, camping and woodworking. He particularly loved exploring waterfalls and cherished the memories made during family vacations, including exciting trips like biking and walking the Mighty Mack. 

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister, Eleanor, and brother, Van.
