The Wayland City Planning Commission will have two public hearings, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, on two proposed ordinances.

The ordinances will be for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and minor changes in regulations for installation and use of solar energy.

Jason Derry, zoning administrator representing Professional Code Inspections (PCI) said Tuesday night that commissioners have discussed the ADU ordinance, but hadn’t yet adopted it.

Commissioner Megan Mickelson asked Derry if Wayland has any ADUs within the city limits. He replied that if there is, it’s not legal.

It was determined that such dwellings, often referred to as “mother-in-law suites,” will be able to be built off auxiliary buildings on the same property as the house, even if it started as a pole barn.

The discussion about solar mainly focused on limiting panels to back yard and roofs, The city isn’t interested in allowing wall panels in the front of the houses because of the possibility of glare. It makes sense that residents would want to have solar panels on the back roof to best catch the sun.
