Wayland Plan Commission sends 3 ordinances to City Council

The Wayland City PlanningPlan commission Commission Tuesday night voted unanimously to send to the City Council its recommendations in favor of three new ordinances.

The first of the three amends regulations for non-conforming lots. It was changed slightly to add the wording for modular lots, “includes, but not limited to.”

The second dealt with amendments for sign regulations changing the wording for digital electronic signs to “electronic message displays.”

The third attempts to make compatible the text and tables (charts) for I-2 (industrial) zoning districts.

Planning Consultant Janis Johnson told commissioners to be aware of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Arizona, in which a majority of judges held that discrimination of signs is prohibited and all must be content neutral. The High Court said local municipalities cannot make regulations different for sizes and dates for removal.

Johnson recommended the commission, “move forward with what you have and let the dust settle.”
