Wayland schools staff under spending freeze

Leslie Wagner

Wayland Union Schools staff and employees have been notified of a spending freeze being implented immediately.

Leslie Wagner, director of finance and operations, sent an e-mail to personnel dated Tuesday, Feb. 25. However, despite Townbroadcast efforts to obtain further explanations, officials from the Martin and Hopkins school districts have not responded to inquiries.

Wagner’s communication is thus:

“Due to current budget constraints, we are implementing an immediate spending freeze across all schools and departments. This means that all non-essential purchases must be paused until further notice to ensure we prioritize resources for essential operations.

“What this means:

  • No new classroom materials, supplies, equipment, or other discretionary spending unless explicitly approved.
  • Any necessary purchases for student instruction or school operations must go through an approval process.

“Approval process for essential purchases:

“;If a purchase is deemed critical to student learning or school functions, the following steps must be followed:

  1. Submit a detailed request to your building or department administrator, explaining the necessity of the expense.
  2. The administrator will review the request and determine if it aligns with essential school needs.
  3. If approved, the request will be processed through standard district procurement procedures.

“Grant fund purchases:

“We understand that the requirements of grants must still be met. If you are making purchases using grant funds, please follow the approval process as outlined above.

“We understand this may impact planned activities and classroom needs, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work through this unique financial situation. Representatives from Central Office will be holding meetings in each school building over the next few weeks to provide additional information.

“If you have any questions, please reach out to your building administrator central office administrator.
