Three Wayland Union Schools students were invited to the Student Technology Showcase Wednesday in Lansing.
The conference was an opportunity for student-led teams from around the state to demonstrate best practices on how technology can enhance teaching and learning for Michigan students.
Student representatives from Wayland were fifth-grader Evalyn Holwerda, eighth-grader Zakary Kadwell and freshman Spencer Miller.
Computer science has allowed students to use their problem-solving skills in innovative ways through computational thinking. Students in grades K-12 gain experience through a variety of unique opportunities including Apple’s Everyone Can Code curriculum, Hour of Code, Code.org, and a variety of hands-on tools such as Finch Robots and Spheros.
At the high school level, students can take a coding course that exposes them to a variety of career options in the computer science field. Students as young as third grade have built their own apps. This work has been supported using funds from MDE’s 99b and IET grants, which have provided professional development work for staff and immediate implementation with students.
