Wayland Union Schools launch ‘Parent University’ program

Wayland Union Schools is launching a new parent education program, “Parent University,” this fall as part of the district’s strategic plan,

The district last November held a public meeting to look at progress made in the five-year strategic plan and to make improvements in existing goals, one of which was to expand parent training opportunities. Suggestions were made to offer parents resources to help with technology, behavior issues and how to help students with homework.

To find all opportunities for parent education, the district will keep a calendar on the district’s website on the Parent University webpage making it easy for parents to see what is happening in all buildings. They will also have a library of video tutorials parents can access anytime at their convenience.

Wayland Union Schools provides iPads for students in grades K-12. Elementary students use iPads in the classroom and beginning in middle school students are able to take iPads home.  This use of technology is important to teach 21st century skills, but can also create questions for parents.

A technology survey was conducted in May to find out what sorts of questions/concerns parents had. They wished to learn more about technology students are using, especially iPads, how to control screen time, and how teachers use this technology in the classroom.  Media specialist Kelly Boston and technology coach Cheryl Wilson created a selection of videos to deal with these topics which are kept on a YouTube channel and are linked to the Parent University page. More videos will be added as needed.

“We are pleased to partner with parents by providing them with resources they need to improve their student’s educational experience and support learning in school and at home,” said Teresa Fulk, assistant superintendent of instructional services. “We hope that many will take advantage of the opportunities being offered.”

Some upcoming programs for this school year are Baker Elementary’s parent workshops and programs offered by Allegan County Community Mental Health on topics such as childhood trauma and substance abuse prevention.

Please refer the Parent University page for more details, dates and times.
