The Wayland Union School district will continue to follow the Covid-19 guidelines outlined by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for at least another 21 days.

This, in the wake of the Michigan Supreme Court ruling Friday that Whitmer did not have the authority to issue a state of emergency after April 30. As a result, the Court stated that “the executive orders issued by the Governor in response to the COVID-19 pandemic lack any basis under Michigan law.”

Shortly after this decision, Governor Whitmer stated, “…this ruling does not take effect for at least 21 days, and until then, my emergency declaration and orders retain the force of law.”

In a letter to parents, Wayland Supot. Dr. Christina Hinds said, “Wayland Union Schools will continue to follow the requirements within the MI Return to School Roadmap, our COVID-19 Preparedness Plan and Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan, which includes ALL safety protocols during Phase 4. As a reminder, effective Monday, October 5, face masks will be required for all students and staff.

“As we continue to navigate this pandemic and the ever changing updates, our children are watching us now and in the coming days and weeks. Teachers and staff have the same expectations of students they did when they left last week. Please remind your child(ren) of the need to follow all safety protocols.

“I will continue to monitor legislative action, stay connected with our state school associations, and keep you posted of any changes impacting Wayland Union Schools. Until then, we will carry on as we have by following our COVID-19 Preparedness Plan…”
