Wayland woman accused of role in nursing home death

A 45-year-old Wayland woman has been accused of vulnerable adult abuse and falsifying medical records in connection with the death of an 85-year-old woman at a Grand Rapids nursing home.

Felony charges were filed by the Michigan Attorney General’s office Wednesday against Denise Filcek, asserting she had a role in the death of an 85-year-old female resident of Crystal Springs Assisted Living Center.

Authorities allege Filcek and Yahira Zamora, 21, of Wyoming, were working one night last October when the victim exited the facility. She then was stranded outdoors in the rain and near-freezing temperatures, which led to her death.

Filcek has been charged with one count of intentional inclusion of misleading or inaccurate information in a medical chart, a felony, for falsely recording the whereabouts of facility residents. The local woman was responsible for visual bed checks every 30 minutes on all patients. Authorities say she failed to check on patients, but checked off the boxes indicating she had.

Zamora has been charged with second-degree vulnerable adult abuse, also a felony, for resetting an alarm door without determining whether any residents had exited the facility.

Both were scheduled to be arraigned in Kent County.
