The Wayland Board of Education decided Monday night to promote from within in hiring two elementary principals.

Robyn Robinson was selected to take over leadership at Pine Street Elementary, succeeding Jennifer Moushegian, who announced her retirement in March. Meanwhile, Christina Johnson was chosen principal to succeed Mike Haverdink, who also announced his retirement in March.

Robinson comes from a family of school administrators. Her father, Jack Wallington, was principal at Dorr Elementary.

She graduated from Wayland High School and then earned a bachelor’s degree in special education and master’s degrees in educational leadership and school counseling. She started her teaching career at Wayland in 2004, then moved on to dean of students and most recently to assistant principal at Pine Street.

Robinson is married to Wayland High School science teacher David Robinson and they have two children, Chase and Teagan.

Johnson, who earned her bachelor’s degree in teaching from Grand Valley State University, earned a master’s degree in reading from GVSU.

A third and fourth grade teacher at Steeby since 2011, she got a trial run last year as acting principal when Haverdink went on medical leave.

Robinson, according to the salary schedule, is expected to earn more than $90,000 annually and Johnson’s pay is expected to be more than $80,000. Both will begin their administrative duties next fall at the start of the 2019-20 academic year.
