Wayland’s move to Division 1 or Class A from Division 2 or Class B actually will not cause any changes in who the Wildcats will play in the next school year.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association last week announced that Wayland was one of eight schools that will be elevated as such because of population changes. However, there are indications that the Wildcats will continue to compete in Class B and Division 2 across the board and continue to be classified as Division 3 in football.
Chris Ludema, who has some skin the game because her daughter is a key member of the softball team, sent an e-mail that said:
“I read the same article on MHSAA’s website. However, on their website, if you pick a sport, then click ‘Assignment’ the 2024/2025 district assignments are out. The student numbers for each sport are different. I checked volleyball, girls basketball and softball, and Wayland will not be moved up to D1, at least in those sports.
“I think a little more research might be needed.”
Ms. Ludema was correct. Further research on the MHSAA site has revealed that despite the move from Class B to Class A, the Wildcats will remain in Division 2 or Class B tournaments. There also is no effect on conference contests, Wayland still will be in the O-K Gold.
