Wayland’s boys’ track was in a hot three-team race for second place in the O-K Gold Conference track meet Friday at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats eventually finished fourth, less than seven points from the runner-up slot behind Catholic Central and Cedar Springs. Forest Hills Eastern emerged as the league champion.
The WHS girls’ squad finished eighth.
It was big day for standout junior Wildcat thrower Adam Huff, who won the shot put and discus. Not only that, he broke his own school record in shot with a put of 55 feet, 11 inches and ran away with the discus competition at 174-09.
Austin Graham was third in the 110-meter high hurdles, but captured the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles at 38.98 seconds.
Teammate Jake Reeder finished second in the 200 with a time of 23.29 seconds.
Jake Reeder, Graham, Geno Wierckz and Aidan Reeder combined efforts to turn in their best time at 1:32.98 to win the 800-meter relay.
Junior distance runner. Dylan Pallett finished fifth in 3200 and sixth in the 1600.
Pallett, Breslin Vandenbos, Maurgan Howard and Xander Stepek hooked up to take fifth in the 3200-meter relay.
Junior Carter Marquard was third in the high jump, clearing an even six feet.
Warren Smith cleared 11 feet six inches to finish fourth in the pole vault.
Kennedy Jasinski had the best individual performance for the ladies’ squad on the day, taking second in the pole vault by clearing 10-6. Sophomore Evie Mathis continued to have injury problems she’s had all spring and did not compete.
Jasinski, Taylor Wolf, Ana Teunissen and Laney Wolf copped third place in the 400-meter relay with a season-best time of 52.41 seconds.
Jasinski, the two Wolfs and Elliot Antel finished fifth in the 800 relay.
Megan Brogger, Taylor Wolf, Antel and Laney Wolf turned in their best, at 4:15.99 to finish third in the 1600-meter relay.
Mackenzie Kositzky was fourth in the shot put at 32-04.
Huff, Graham, Henry Maass and Gino Wierckz put together their best time of the season at 43.76 seconds, but settled for third in the 400-meter relay.
