WHS Class of ’18 summa cum laude honors announced

Wayland Union Schools has announced the Class of 2018 graduating seniors who have earned cumulative grade point averages of 4.0 of higher, thereby earning summa cum laude academic honors.

The students and brief biographical sketches follow:

Oliver Breese is the child of Robert Breese and Jamie Reed. Activities include Honor Roll for four years, PALS and GSA President. Plans after graduation include attending Western Michigan University’s Lee Honors College to double major in Psychology and Gender and Women’s Studies.

Eric Chandler is the son of Patrick and Jacqueline Chandler. Eric was a member of the WUHS FIRST Robotics Team. He plans to attend Michigan Technological University to study Physics.

Chanlyn Commons is the daughter of Michelle and Carl Commons. She was a member of Student Council, PALS, WAHOOS, and a board member of the National Honor Society. Chanlyn was selected as the DAR Good Citizen and was on the honor roll for four years. She was a Captain for volleyball, golf and softball. Chanlyn plans to attend Ferris State University’s Honors Pharmacy Program.

Chloe Coughlin is the daughter of Beth Coughlin. She is a member of the National Honor Society, PALS and Student Council. Chloe played softball, volleyball, golf and basketball. Future plans include attending Grand Valley State University to study Elementary Education.

Matthew Gauthier is the son of Robert and Veronica Gauthier. He was on the Honor Roll for four years, participated in FIRST Robotics for three years, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Matthew played soccer for two years and was in Orchestra for six years. He plans to further his education at Michigan Technological University to study Aerospace Engineering.

Victoria Helrigel is the daughter of Todd Helrigel. After graduation she will attend the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts to obtain a degree in English.

Jessica Henderson is the daughter of Dawn Larkin and Larry Henderson. She was on the bowling team for four years and volunteered as a second grade coach at Thornapple Valley Church. After graduation she plans to join YWAM (Youth With a Mission) in Kona.

Anna Kidwell is the daughter of Jason and Chrissy Harris. She is a member of the National Honor Society, held scholastic honors for four years, participated in Science Olympiad and played violin in the Orchestra. Anna plans to attend Michigan State University and major in Pre-Med.

Ethan Killips is the son of Rod and Christy Killips. He was on Honor Roll for four years and is a member of the National Honor Society. He was on the FIRST Robotics Team for 2 years, ran cross country for four years and was Captain for two years. Ethan will attend the Honors College at Michigan State University to study Biology.

Landon Kohtz is the son of Keith and Tammy Kohtz. He is a member of the National Honors Society, was on Honor Roll for four years, earned his Eagle Scout, was the Design Lead on the High School FIRST Robotics Team and participated in Science Olympiad. Landon was the captain of the JV Soccer team where he played for two years. He plans to attend Michigan Technological University to study Mechanical Engineering.

Malachi Lapham is the son of Jodi and Donald Lapham. He was on the Honor Roll for four years and was in Orchestra for six years. Malachi plans to attend Ferris State University.

Samantha Nieuwkoop is the daughter of Chris Nieuwkoop and Lori Davis. She was on the Honor Roll for four year, is a member of the National Honor Society and played basketball for four years. Samantha plans to attend Davenport University for Nursing.

Lauren Oatmen is the daughter of Nick and Kelly Oatmen. She was on the honor roll for four years, is a member of the National Honors Society and Student Council. Lauren played varsity tennis for two year. She plans to attend Davenport University to study accounting.

Noelle Oman is the daughter of Brett and Elizabeth Oman. She was on Honor Roll for four years and was on Student Council. Noelle was on the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists Award of Excellence Honor Roll for one year. As a tennis player, she earned Most Coachable Player in 2016 and Most Valuable Player in 2017. Noelle plans to continue her education at Michigan State University to major in Political Science and minor in Spanish with goals of being an Immigration Lawyer.

Hope Reurink is the daughter of Tim and Holly Reurink. She is member of the National Honor Society and the FIRST Robotics Team. Hope received the Scholastic Honors Award for four years. She participated in swim, track and cross country. She plans to attend Michigan Technological University to study medical laboratory research.

Camden Ritz is the son of Kenny and Pam Ritz. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Pro Youth Team and was on Honor Roll for four years. Camden was the Team Captain in baseball for three years. He plans to attend Grand Valley State University.

Mitchell Salisbury is the son of Mike and Jill Salisbury. He received the Scholastic Honor Awards for four years, was a member of Student Council for two years and the National Honor Society for two years. Mitchell is Captain of the golf team and played varsity golf for three years. He plans to attend Michigan State University in the Honors College to study Business Management.

Allyson Schafer is the daughter of Ron and Kim Schafer. She was on Honor Roll for four years, a member of Student Council and National Honor Society. Allyson was on the varsity swim and dive team and three-year captain. She was All-Conference for four years and All-State for diving for three years. She attended the West Michigan Diving Academy. Future plans include diving for the University of Louisville while majoring in Political Science.

Anna Smith is the daughter of Scott Smith and Clyde and Kelly Lewis. She is a member of the National Honors Society, Business Professionals of America, and was on Honor Roll for four years. Activities include attending New Life Community Church and ICON Youth Group. She will attend Davenport University to study Pediatric Nursing.

Sydney Urban is the daughter of William and Julie Urben. She is member of the National Honor Society. Sydney is a five time, All-State Athlete in bowling and softball playing on the 2015 softball state championship team. She was also the 2018 bowling singles state champion and the 2016 bowling singles state runner-up. After graduation she plans to continue her bowling career and is currently undecided on college plans.

Macey Winger is the daughter of Brent and Sue Winger. Macey was on the Honor Roll for four years, a member of PALS and Student Council. She played volleyball and basketball. After graduation Macey will attend Paul Mitchell to pursue a career in Cosmetology.

Rebeca Yanes is the daughter of Roger and Sandra Yanes. Rebeca was on Honor Roll for four years, was the President of National Honors Society, Chief Editor/Photographer of Yearbook, and a member of PALS. She volunteers as a Bible school teacher for Voz De Restauración Church. She plans to study Communications and International Studies at the University of Michigan.
