The Wayland girls’ bowling team captured the O-K Conference championship Friday at Spectrum Lanes in Grand Rapids and the boys’ squad was runner-up to state powerhouse Northview.
Boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak said, “We saved our best games until last today, which made things interesting and we lost the tournament by just two spares.”
The Wildcats rolled well in their first match game, as Wil Dewing rolled a 200, Dominik Baker 182, and Kyle VanEss 217.
“We were only about six or seven pins behind Northview.” Miklusicak said.
Dominik Baker was high bowler in game two with a 188 and Louie Harnish was high bowler in game three with a 196.
Game three was a struggle on the lanes and Northview struggled on them as well.
“The disadvantage was we had to roll five games on the pair and Northview only had to roll two Baker games on them.”
Northview had a couple of very low Baker games while Wayland rolled a 236 and 210 for its first two games,. And it was down by just 59 pins.
The ‘Cats continued to gain ground on them with the last two Baker games of 184 and 208, but it wasn’t enough to come back to win the tournament.
“We still have regional and state tournaments ahead, so we could meet them again,” the coach indicated.
Northview was the state runner up from last year and they are legitimately good.
“We have challenged Northview on several occasions this year and they definitely know we are on their heels,” Miklusicak said. “Can they keep up with our pressure?”
