WHS girls’ hoops games halted after ref heart attack

The Wayland girls’ basketball junior varsity and varsity games at Cedar Springs Tuesday evening were postponed.

An attendee reported that a referee of the jayvee contest collapsed on the floor with a heart attack, clearing athletes and officials. Jessy Terry of Wayland indicated that Wildcat player Dacey Schaefer’s grandfather, school public safety officer John Schaefer, performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on the ailing ref and and they used a defibrillator twice on him to get him to come to.

He then was awake and talking when the ambulance arrived to take him to a hospital.

It is not yet known when the basketball games will be rescheduled.
