WHS grad helps guide 2nd place collegiate cross team

Wayland High School graduate Robert Young is assistant cross-country coach for Michigan Technological University, which took the runner-up slot Saturday morning in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association meet. The Huskies were second to perennial champion and NCAA Division II top-ranked Grand Valley, which is Young’s alma mater. Young was hired at Michigan Tech after coaching track and cross country at Rampart High School in Colorado Springs, winning league championships and guiding more than a few athletes to all-state status. He graduated from Wayland in 2003 and was an NCAA All-American in cross country and in the steeplechase in track. He and his wife, Sarah, live in Houghton with their son, Corvid, who turns 3 years old on Nov. 2.
