The Wayland boys’ bowling team returned to the lanes Monday after the holiday break and posted a 27-3 victory over Grand Rapids West Catholic. The girls’ squad also won, 21-9.
The Wildcats’ starting line up of Dominik Baker, Wil Dewing, Louie Harnish, Jayse Henkel and Kyle VanEss started out well with a 182 Baker game vs West Catholic’s 150. Harnish and VanEss both had two strikes in their two frames.
However, Baker game two started out poorly for both teams. The ‘Cats had a spare and followed it with two opens.
“So I taught the boys an old trick when we scored by hand,” said coach Sherry Miklusicak. “I drew a ‘fence,’ which is just a squiggly line. In the old days, that meant your bad frames were over and you would bowl well after that.”
The boys didn’t open again and won that game 178-154, to go up 10-0.
Baker took both his points with a solid performance of 180 and 175 games. Dewing took a point, as did Harnish with the high game of the night, a 255.
Henkel took a point and missed another one by just three pins. VanEss had 225 and 209 games, taking both his points.
Jumping out to an early 10-0 lead, the Wayland girls won both Baker games and had the match won early. Taking a point for the team were Brooke Trumbull, Haven Baker, and Ava Harnish. Lily Keech took both points! High score of the day for girls was the second Wayland Baker game of 172..

The two weeks off for the Wildcat JV boys must have helped them build up their strength. Unfortunately, West Catholic didn’t have enough bowlers for an actual match. Drake Smith rolled a 167, Asher Hendriks rolled 185, and Shawn Hooper a 171 – all personal bests.
