Wayland High School math teacher Linda (Anderson) Bensyl has been selected as a Michigan state-level finalist in mathematics by a selection committee for this year’s Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program for excellence in mathematics teaching.
She is one of three mathematics teachers selected to represent the state’s best at the national competition. The state selection team was very impressed with her commitment to excellence in teaching and her compassion for her students.
As a state-level finalist, Bensyl is automatically a candidate for the state Presidential Award and has been forwarded for judging at the national level. At the next part of the selection process, a prestigious national committee reporting to the National Science Foundation will identify the teacher selected for the Presidential Awards from Michigan’s finalist(s).
The teacher selected as the state Presidential Awardee will be notified officially by the White House in the spring of 2018. Each state Presidential Awardee will receive $10,000 and an all-expense-paid trip for two to Washington, D.C., where Presidential Awardees will be honored in a variety of recognition events.
During the coming school year, the state-level finalists in both mathematics and science will be honored at a ceremony in Lansing. Bensyl will also be recognized by the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics in the coming school year.
