Why was Elm Street dropped from city street project?

It appears that the long-awaited repairs and paving for Wayland streets on the northwest side of town will be getting under way soon, but there’s still an issue that has to be overcome.

While signs are appearing to tell of road closures and work to be done on Park, Church, Clark and Mill Streets, funded largely by a $250,000 state grant, the city apparently promised last year the project would include Elm Street. Sandy Larsen, a resident on Elm, complained that somehow Elm has been dropped from the plans.

“We can’t even drive on that street,” she told the City Council Monday night. “It’s a mess… Why are we not included? Why are we doing just one-third of the road and not taking care of the rest of it?”

She said she was told the change in plans had something to do with water lines.

The streets on the northwest side have been plagued by potholes, prompting complaints by the people who live there. They maintain they’ve been waiting a long time and have had to endure only patchwork on the potholes.

City Manager Josh Eggleston said improvement and paving projects for the four streets had two be mothballed temporarily several years ago because of lack of funding and the need to complete the reconstruction and paving project on South Main Street.

Mayor Jennifer Antel acknowledged she could not answer Ms. Larsen’s questions sufficiently, but the issue would be passed along to city staff.
