The Wayland varsity baseball team ended a difficult week on a positive note Friday evening by sweeping doubleheader against non-league opponent Comstock Park, 5-4 and 6-3.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the seventh and final inning of the opener to scratch out the victory.
They had fallen behind in the early innings, 4-2, because of some defensive errors, but were able to rally in the seventh to go ahead for good.
Logan Sevigny and Zach Brog both had multiple hit games, while Sean Maddux drove in four runs.
The nightcap was cut short to five innings due to darkness. The Wildcats plated six runs and after giving up a few early runs, they settled down, getting good pitching and playing solid defense to hold the Panthers scoreless in the final two innings.
The offense picked up for ‘Cats in the fourth, when they scored four runs to take the lead. Chris Kincaid then came on in the fifth and struck out the side to get the save.
Austin Page and Sean Maddux had two hits apiece, while Hunter Brown chipped in with two RBIs.
It had been a difficult week because Wayland lost three straight contests to O-K Gold Conference rival Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The Wildcats lost both ends of a doubleheader Tuesday, 3-2 and 3-0, and then endured an awful single game Thursday with a 9-0 loss.
Wayland’s overall season record now is 4-7 and it is 1-4 in the league.
