Both the Wayland girls’ and boys’ varsity bowling teams this weekend will be rolling for all the marbles in the O-K Gold Conference against Cedar Springs.

The boys Monday lost to Grand Rapids Catholic Central 23-7 to fall into second place. The girls beat Catholic Central, which had only two bowlers, 29-1 to move into the position of challenging for the title.

“Catholic Central was focused, poised, and ready for us today,” boys’ coach Sherry Miklusicak said. “Every shot they rolled was like the game was on the line.  They were consistent with every shot. They were balanced and hit their mark.”

The coach indicated the Wildcats embarrassed Catholic Central earlier this season at the Rock ’N Bowl early in the season and now they have returned the favor.

“We opened three times in the first Baker game and it only got worse from there, opening five times in Baker two,” she recounted.

Louie Harnish went 3 for 4 as did Wil Dewing. Kyle VanEss was 4 for 5.

“Catholic is a really good team, as we are. You can’t just let them start out with easy points and expect to win,” Miklusicak said.

In match one, the only Wayland point taken was from freshman Louie Harnish, who rolled a nice 207 game.  Another bowler lost by only three pins.

In match two, Jayse Henkel, and Wil Dewing took points.

“I believe that puts us 1/2 point behind Cedar Springs as we held on to first place for several weeks,” Miklusicak said. “The regular season of matches is over, but we still have a shot to take first place on Friday at our Post-Conference Tournament.”

Because Catholic Central only has two female bowlers, the Cougars so must take zeros for their missing bowlers.

Rolling well for the ladies were Jasmine Ortiz 147, Haven Baker 193.

The ladies roll Friday in the post-tournament competition and Friday will need to get past Cedar Springs if they want a shot at the Gold,” reported coach Eric Bottrall.
