Both the Wayland boys’ and girls’ varsity bowling teams absorbed defeat in a non-league dual matches Monday afternoon against Jenison at Station 300 in Grandville. The boys lost 19-11 and the girls 22-8.

Boy’s team coach Sherry Miklusicak said, “It was expected to be a tough match, as Jenison is well coached by a well known and respected Slaghter family. Two of their high school bowlers are part of that  family as well.

Wayland took the first Baker match and lost the second Baker, along with total. So the ‘Cats were down 6-4.

Jayse Henkel led the team this afternoon with games of 170 and 184, taking his match point in game two. Raynie Arendsen took his point in match two as well with a 151. Adding another point was anchor Kyle VanEss with a 193 (team high).

With the help of Dominik Baker and Wil Dewing, the Wildcats team took total pins in game two as well.

“Our team is young, but that doesn’t mean anything,” Miklusicak said. “These young men are talented and hard-working. I think a surprise may be in store for the OK Gold this year…

“We are fortunate to have a JV team this year as well.”

Taking points for the Lady Wildcats were Baker game two, Izzy Botwinski 154, Haven Baker 181. These two veteran ladies took points in match two as well.

The team lost game one by just 20 pins. Just two spares separated the team total.
