Both Wayland High School track teams emerged victorious Saturday at the Hopkins Invitational.
The guys won with 191 points and Sparta was second with 99. The girls collected 93 points, just two more than runner-up Hopkins.
The Wildcat boys again showed a lot of depth in the sprints and in the relays.
Kaharrie Pureifoy won the 100-meter dash in 11.6 seconds after turning in an 11.3-second clocking i9n the prelims. He also took first in the 200 with a time of 23.48 seconds and in the long jump at 19-9.75.
Austin Graham recorded his best-ever time in winning the 110-meter high hurdles in 16 seconds flat. He also turned in a personal best 42.84 seconds in winning the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.
Winning the 400-meter relay was the quartet of Terry Sylvester, Graham, Came Mouketou and Pureifoy in 44.86. Dylan Pallett, Zachary Keene, Travis Moon and Devin Weaver hooped up to win the 3200-meter relay in 8:30.9.
Adam Huff and Bronson Huyck went 1-2 in the shot put, with Huff’s winning toss reaching 45-8. Huff also won the discus with a throw of 149-9.5.
Devin Weaver claimed runner-up status in both the 800- and 1600-meter runs. Pallett was runner-up in the 3200.
For Hopkins, Landen Klinge actually tied for first place in the pole vault at 11-6, but had more misses.
However, Klinge , Miles Corneille, Noah Corneille and Clayton Kerber finished first in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:37.53.
Trent Baugh finished second in the open 400.
Kambria Moored won the 100-meter high hurdles for Hopkins in 17:07, barely edging Wayland’s Brenna Hyde by 17.07 seconds to 17.08. She came back to claim the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.33, again edging Hyde by a little more than a second. Hyde, however, came back to capture first place in the long jump at 16-4.
Moored, Ellarie Baugh, Sierra Emaus and Riley Homrich took second in the 400-meter relay. Lady Vikings Navy Ingle, Ava VanderVeen, Kara Rodenhisler and Jaeden Harshberger hooked up for a second in the 1600 relay.
Harshberger cleared 4-10 again to take first in the high jump.
Sophomore Kennedy Jasinski of Wayland earned a first in the pole vault, stepping up in the absence of school record holder Evie Mathis, who has injury issues and didn’t compete.
The Lady Wildcats didn’t score many first or seconds in the meet, but their third and fourth and overall depth carried the day in the final team scoring.
