Wildcat boys’ bowlers stun Zeeland; girls take 1st loss

The young and improving Wayland High School boys’ bowling team scored a huge non-league dual match 19-11 victory Tuesday over Zeeland.

“In the time that I have coached bowling in Wayland, we have never been able to tackle the two Division 1 schools combined team,” coach Sherruy Miklusicak said. “My first year coaching, we had a great team and Cameron Heintzelman even rolled a 300 against Zeeland and they still would beat us. Well, bot tonight. That run of losses was broken!”

The girls’ squad, however, suffered its first dual match defeat, 28-2.

The boys started with a four-bagger, their coach said, followed by a spare and then a turkey (three strikes) and then by two spares for whopping 241 game! The boys didn’t miss one frame, they were all marks, defeating Zeeland in Baker one, 241-163.

“Sometimes a team can have a big letdown after having a hot game like that. Nope, not today!” Miklusicak said. “Our boys to men battled for a great 186 game, defeating Zeeland again as they only had a 160. Welcome to our house! Freshman Ashton Kasprowicz had all four of his frames as strikes! Stephen Harnish had three strikes, as did Chandler Caruso (with a spare too). Mark Musgrave two strikes and a spare and Deven Gardner had all four spares.

Leading off in match one was Stephen Harnish who took his point with a 162. Anchor bowler Deven Gardner took his point as well with a 193.

The two teams were tied for total pins in the eighth frame, but having a disastrous 10th frame of all opens (except for Deven Gardner striking out in the tenth) cost Wayland total pins 795-881, but the ‘Cats were still in the lead 12-7 and Zeeland was getting warmed up.

Down the stretch Stephen Harnish 212 (took his point), Ashton Kasprowicz 185 (took his point), Chandler Caruso 190 (took his point), Mark Musgrave III 158 and Deven Gardner rolled a very good 197 game, but didn’t take his point.

“Who would think a fine game like that and lost your point?” Miklusicakl said. “Deven battled and never gave up! By battling for every pin, our men were able to take total pins in match two. They rolled a season high 942 to Zeeland’s 877.”

The Lady Wildcats bowled against the very talented Zeeland girls’ squad at Rock N Bowl Lanes. Zeeland won 28-2.

“Our team definitely bowled better then the outcome showed,” said coach Eric Bottrall. “We had Haven and Madison getting some more time with our varsity ladies. This is great as we continue to improve.

“We set this match up to help show our ladies where we would like to get as a group. Zeeland has five solid bowlers on their starting lineup.”

Haven Baker had a high game of 108, Madison Bottrall 94, Breanna Hyde 169, Kadence Bottrall 206 and BellaHarnish with a 224 game.

The loss dropped the girls’ overall season dual match record to 9-1.
