Wildcat boys edge South Christian by taking 1600-meter relay

The Wayland boCoed-Track-200x112ys’ track team defeated South Christian 70-65 in an exciting meet that came down to the last race of the night, the 1600-meter relay.

Wildcats Justin Fleser, Owen Glass, Trent Thelen and Carson Nieuwenhuis hooked up to win that last race in 3:40.15.

The Lady Wildcats squad, however, dropped a 108-29 dual meet verdict in O-K Gold Conference action Tuesday.

After being dominated in the field events and losing some points in the sprints, the Wayland boys’ distance crew outscored the Sailors 34 to 3. Coach Marty Howard singled out the performances of Lee Anderson, Trent Thelen, and Jeremy Pletcher.

Besides the 1600 relay, Thelen, Devin Rosewarne, Landen Merren and Jonathan Zuiderveen combined efforts to win the 3200 relay in 9:37.10. Pletcher won the open 1600-meter run in 4:52.18, Owen Glass captured the 800 in 2:09.93, Perry Carter took the 3200 in 10:38.07 and Nieuwenhuis once again crossed the finish line first in his specialty, the open 400, in 51.95 seconds.

Other firsts were registered by Lee Anderson in both the 110-meter hurdles in 17.75 and the 300 hurdles in 44.06 seconds, and  Mccarty Carpenter in the shot put at 45-3.75.

Brooke Mulder was a particularly bright spot for the Wildcat girls, as she took first in the shot with her career-best effort of 28’6″ and McKenna Dutkiewicz placed third (23’5″). Jaznae Randall took first in the 100-meter with a PR of 13.67.

In the high jump, Sydney Couturier jumped 4’8″ for second and Kennedy Richardson also jumped 4’8″ for third. Riley Shepherd placed second in the 1600 with a seasonal PR of 5:58.66. Randall was runner-up in the long jump (13’5.75″) and Briana Ludwig placed third with a jump of 12’11.25.″

Rachel Zywiczynski took a third in the Discus (69’8.5″). Kennedy Richardson was second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.42. Emily Isenhoff ran to a seasonal PR in the 3200 with a time of 13:30.97.
