Wildcat boys, girls both finish regular seasons in top 10

The final regular season MWHS basketballichigan Associated Press Class B polls include both the Wayland boys’ and girls’ basketball teams.

The girls finished fourth, just behind O-K Gold Conference rival Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The Lady Wildcats, 20-1 for the season overall as they head into Wednesday night’s district semifinal, split with the Cougars, 18-2, during the regular campaign.

Interesting sidelights include an undefeated Plainwell girls’ hoops team that went 20-0 and faces Hopkins at Paw Paw Wednesday evening, and finally has been included in the top 10, at the No. 10 slot.

Another sidelight is that Ypsilanti Arbor Prep, the only other team to beat Cathoklic Central this season, is ranked No. 3 in Class C, tied with undefeated Gobles.

The Wildcat boys finished sixth the AP poll, sporting a 16-3 record. Also in the top 10 is Wyoming Godwin Heights, which may very well be the opponent March 13 if the ‘Cats make it to the district finals on the Wolverines’ home floor.

Milan, the team that ended the Wildcats’ tournament run last year in the quarterfinals, is still ranked No. 1.

It was not known for certain, but this may be the first time in the history of Wayland athletics that both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have finished among the top 10 teams statewide.
