Wildcat boys, girls both lose to GR Christian power

The Grand Rapids Christian boys’ track team is new to the O-K Gold Conference, but it’s already regarded as one of the top contenders for the league title.

The Eagles cruised to a 101.5 to 35.5 dual meet victory over Wayland boys Wednesday. The girls’ squad, meanwhile, lost 90 to 47.

All four team embers had to survive a deluge of rain at the start of the meet.

Lady Wildcats coach Ray Antel singled out Jessica Hortman for helping the 4×100-meter relay quartet to victory, taking second in the shot with a personal best put of 27-0 while taking sixth in the 100-meter high hurdles and leading Wildcats in the long jump.

Maggie Whitney tripled up to take first place finishes in the 400 (1:05.32), the 800 (2:35.51) and she led the winning 4×400 relay along with Abbie Hasse, Vanessa Brown and Corrina Courser.

Oh yes, and Courser, who crashed onto the track scene last weekend as one of the premier freshman hurdlers, won the 100 hurdles in 16.78 and the 300 in 50.4 seconds.

Rylee Cronkright captured the 1600 in 6:03.56 and Zoe Antel was third. They went 2-3 in the 3200.

“The boys were defeated as a team, but there were many personal bests and great amounts of improvement,” said coach Marty Howard. Performing well for the Wildcats were Caleb Pletcher, Devin Westfahl and Anthony Muscarella.

Wildcats’ winners:

  • 800 Relay — Devin Jakey, Anthony Muscarella, Seth Sevenski-Popma and Caleb Wolf, 1:36.47
    300 Hurdles – Devin Westfahl, 46.25
    800 Meters — Caleb Pletcher, 2:18.18
1600 Relay — Caleb Wolf, Jacob Butler, Alec Zoerman and Anthony Muscarella, 3:48.93.
