Both the Wayland High School girls’ and boys’ track teams finished fifth Friday in the Allegan Invitational.
The Wildcat girls would have done a heck of lot better if both of their pole vaulters would have taken part. Junior Evie Mathis was state runner-up last year and Kennedy Jasinski has been a consistent scoring performer.
The boys’ team collected 51 points in the field of 15 teams in the competition. The girls scored 47, also with 15 teams present. Whitehall won the boys’ meet with 116 points and Middleville Thornapple Kellogg won the girls with 135.5.
Senior Dylan Pallett was fourth in the 1600-meter run and fifty in the 3200. Jake Reeder checked in fourth and fifth in the 200 and 400. Alex Hubbard finished fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles. Ashton Kuhlman was fifth and teammate Ashton Kasprowicz fifth in the shot put. Kuhlman also was fifth in the discus.
Gavin Howard cleared 6-0 to finish fourth in the high jump.
The Wildcat boys were shut out in the relays and did not finish as high as third in any event.
Tied for the best individual performance for the girls was a second-place finish by Gwen Howard, clearing 4-10.
Sophomore Megan Brogger took third in the 100-meter dash. Brogger also was runner-up in the open 400 with a time of 60.9 seconds.
Brogger, Quinn Reeder, Gwen Howard and Ella Edwards combined efforts to finish third in the 800-meter relay.
Freshman Bre Hoogewind was fourth in the 800.
Mackenzie Kositzky, who also plays softball, finished fifth in the discus.
Sophomore Kendyl Scott leaped 14-2 to take fifth in the long jump.
Sad to see a discipline specific decorated uniform. It’s one sport, one team. Why have uniforms specific to a discipline?
