The Wayland High School boys’ golf team Wednesday qualified for the Division 2 state tournament by taking second in the regional tournament at Hawkshead Links, South Haven.

The Wildcats fired a team score of 312, finishing runner-up to regional champion East Grand Rapids, which carded a 298 for the 18-hole tourney. Byron Center checked in third with a 321, as the top three among the 18 teams participating earned a berth in the state tourney.

Wayland junior Rory Myers led the team with an individual score of 72. Carson Sevigny checked in with a 76 and freshman Tyler Omness and Mitch Salisbury both carded an 82. Rory Bessinger had an 86, but his score wasn’t counted.

Asher Meekoff of Allendale was individual regional champion with a 71 and Myers was tied for second with Will Robson of East Grand Rapids at just one stroke back.

The Wildcats will compete in the state tourney Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9, at the Bedford Valley Country Club, Battle Creek.
