The Wayland High School boys’ track team opened its dual meet season Wednesday with an 80-57 loss to O-K Gold Conference rival Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

The girls lost as well, by a county of 95.5-41.5.

Boys’ coach Marty Howard said he was particularly impressed with the performances of Devin Jakey, Cody Clewell and Lee Anderson.

The Wildcat boys recorded first places in eight of the 17 events, but TK bested them on depth.

Winning events for Wayland during the afternoon were:

• Pole Vault — Elijah Veldman, 9’6″.
• Long Jump — Devin Jakey, 18’2″.
• 110-meter high hurdles — Lee Anderson, 16.22 seconds.
• 100-meter dash — Devin Jakey 11.86.
• 800-meter relay — Jakey, Anthony Muscarella, Seth Sevenski-Popma and Caleb Wolf.
• 400-meter run — Seth Sevenski-Popma.
• 300-meter low hurdles — Lee Anderson, 43.84.
• 4 x 400 relay — Sevenski-Popma, Anderson, Ashton Ordway and Muscarella, 3:46.91.

Girls’ coach Ray Antel raved about the efforts of his 3200-meter relay team of Rylee Cronkright, Grace Hasse, Zoe Antel and Maggie Whitney, who came from behind to win the race with a time of 10:57.14.

Brittany Ludwig took second in the high jump while Julia Belke tied for third. Asiia Sok tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 6 feet. McKenna Dutkiewicz was third in the shot put with a throw of 25’9″ and a third in the discus with a toss of 77’5.″ Elizabeth Barnes threw 82’8.5″ to take secondnd in the discus.

Taking first in the 400-meter relay with a time of 59.21 was the quartet of Khylea Wells, Jessica Hortman, Brittany Ludwig and Savannah VanHouten.

Zoe Antel took third in the 1600 while Cronkright was second in the 3200 and second in the 800, running a 2:49.95. Maggie Whitney had quite a night, winning the 800 with a time of 2:36.12 and the 400 with a time of 66.31.

In the 100 hurdles, Corrina Courser placed third with a time of 18.29 and smoked the field in the 300 hurdles in a blistering time of 51.01.

Coach Antel remarked, “Grace Hasse displayed the most grit tonight, taking a tumble at the end of the 300 hurdles, but still finishing in a time of 60.91.”
