Wayland split its two season-opening soccer matches this week, defeating Otsego 1-0 Wednesday night, but losing its season debut 4-1 to Zeeland East.

Wayland pressured Otsego heavily in the first half, creating 11 shots on goal. The Otsego goalie had a strong showing as he protected his net keeping the game scoreless by halftime.

Wayland continued its pressure in the second half and eventually took the lead after a pass from Austin VanHees found Austin Wroblewski, who then put the ball past the Bulldogs’ goalie to take a 1-0 lead.

Otsego fought hard to even the score, but goalie Kyle Thelen made 10 saves to record his first shutout of the year. Juniors Jarrod Haase and Alec Zoerman lead a solid defensive game which helped shut down the offensive attack from Otsego.

The team is now 1-1 on the season and will start O-K Gold Conference play Monday evening against Thornapple Kellogg.
