The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team won a 47-44 squeaker at Mattawan Tuesday night in a nonleague contest, but the Lady Wildcats earlier in the evening lost a 39-38 heartbreaker.
It was the second straight time the Wildcats boys, now 14-1 and ranked No. 4 in this week’s Associated Press Class B state-wide poll, won by single digits. They bested Grand Rapids Catholic Central 65-59 Friday night.
Wayland girls led almost the entire way, but ended up losing on a last second jump shot by Mattawan. Only seven girls dressed for the contest as the team continues to fight fight through injuries. All seven scored in Tuesday’s ballgame.
The Lady Wildcats were lead by Sydney Ritz with 9 points, Bethany Teuniessen with 8 and Taryn Coughlin had seven. Missing from the lineup were starters Ali Cutler and Karli Warning, both sidelined with injuries.
The Lady Wildcats’ one-point loss dropped their overall season record to 8-9, the first time they have slipped below the .500 mark.
Both the Wayland boys and girls will be at home Friday evening to be host to O-K Gold Conference rival Hastings.
