The Wayland boys’ varsity track team got off to a strong season start Tuesday afternoon by posting victories over Cedar Springs, 94-43, and Grand Rapids Catholid Central, 84-53.
The Lady Wildcats split in their double O-K Gold Conference double dual, besting Catholic Central 70-67, but dropping an 80-57 verdict to Cedar Springs.
Sprints again proved to demonstrate Wildcat boys’ prowess.
Senior Ian Thompson, who has committed to running for Michigan State University next year, turned in a personal best 10.73-second performance in the 100-meter dash. He came back to take first in the 200 meters with a personal best 22.45.
Thompson hooked up with Hudson Biondo, Masen Wilson and Terry Sylvester to win the 400-meter relay in 46.19 and captured top honors in the long jump with a leap of 20-10.75.
Sophomore Kaharrie Purefoy, who was runner-up to Thompson in the 100, hooked up with Sylvester, Biondo and Cainon Fenn to take first in the 800-meter relay in 1:36.55.
Sophomore Austin Graham had a terrific season debut in the hurdles, winning the 110-meter highs in 17.27 seconds and taking the 300-meter intermediates in 44.56, beating all comers by almost two seconds.
Devvin Weaver, Henry Oudbier, Aiden Reeder and Fenn combined efforts to win the 1600-meter relay in 3:42.13.
Carson Noyes, Adam Huff, only a freshman, and Bronson Huyck swept the shot put, with Noyes’ winning toss of 44-10. Noyes and Huyck went 1-2 in the discus at 119-3 and 114-10.
Brenna Hyde was back in form for the Wildcat girls by taking the 100-meter hurdles in 17.59 seconds and teammate Emma Byers was runner-up. Hyde also won the long jump with a leap of 15-9.5.
Hyde, Kennedy Jasinski, Faith Rollandini and Taylor Wolf checked in first in the 400-meter relay in 55.07 seconds. Wolf, Elliot Antel, Rollandini and Jasinski hooked up ton win the 800-meter relay.
Olivia Barabas, Antel. Hannah Smith and Ava Makowski turned in a 10:57.19 clocking to win the 3200-meter relay.
Jasinski, a freshman, was second in the pole vault at 9-0 and Makowski and Barabas went 2-3 in the 200-meter dash.
