Wildcat cross boys capture Allegan Invitational trophy

It was another big day for the Wayland High School cross-country teams at the Allegan Invitational Saturday.

The Wildcat boys captured first place in the combined team results and the girls finished third, with junior Olivia Barabas taking second in the individual race.

Wayland boys had a combined 50 points, 38 ahead of runner-up Hamilton in the 12-team field. The girls ended up with 81 points, with the Grand Rapids Track Club finishing first with 48 and Paw Paw 63.

Devin Weaver again was the first Wildcat to cross the finish line, in fourth place in 17:19.90 on the five-kilometer course on the Allegan County Fairgrounds. Right behind him in sixth place was freshman Dylan Pallett in 17:35.26 and Travis Koon checked in 12th in 18:05.14.

Rounding out the top five, which featured all sub-20-minute performances were Henry Oudbier in 18:06.65 and Isaac Dyer in 18:22.47. The ‘Cats also welcomed back sophomore James Butler after an injury, who ran a more than respectable 18:32.55.

Barabas completed her 5K race in 19:48.62 and she and Jana Stifer of the Grand Rapids Track Club Peregrines were the only girls to finish in less than 20 minutes.

Sophomore teammate Elliot Antel was 10th in in 21:42.54 and senior Hannah Smith was 13th in 21:57.52.
