The Wayland girls’ cross-country team was second and the boys third in the season-opening Early Bird Invitational Friday at Hudsonville Unity Christian.

The host team won the girls’ competition with 24 team points and Wayland had 35. For the boys, Holland West Ottawa won with 25, Unity Christian checked in with 33 and Wayland 82.

Senior Gracie Hasse led the Lady Wildcats with a runner-up finish at 25:37.32. Junior Naomi Oosterhouse was third and sophomore Hannah Smith seventh. All three were awarded medals.

Sophomore Sydney Hasse was 17th and freshman Emma Thayer 23rd.

Senior Ian Russell led the Wildcat boys in 19th place. Freshman Travis Koon was 23rd.

The boys’ and girls’ squads will be back in action next Thursday in the annual Kelloggsville Rocket Invitational.
