Both the Wayland boys’ and girls’ varsity cross-country teams captured a dual meet victory Tuesday afternoon against the Grand Rapids Track Club, 23-34 and 23-36, respectively.

The results left the Lady Wildcats with an overall season record of 3-0 while the guys now are 2-1.

The Wildcat boys took the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh places after the Peregrines’ freshman Josiah Miller was individual medalist in 18:35.9. Freshman Isaac Dyer paced Wayland in the runner-up slot with a five-kilometer time of 18:53.1 and sophomore Travis Koon checked in third at 18:53.6.

Rounding out the scoring were freshman Casey Jansen in fifth, freshman Henry Oudbier in sixth and sophomore Devin Weaver in seventh.

All eight of the Wildcats’ top finishers were either freshmen or sophomores.

Just as in the boys’ meet, the Peregrines boasted on the individual medalist of the day, as Jana Stiffler won with a time of 21:02.

But the Lady Wildcats captured second, third and fourth places with freshman Ava Makowski (21:47), sophomore Olivia Barabas and junior Hannah Smith, respectively. Freshman Elliot Antel was sixth a nd sophomore Emma Thayer eighth.

The Lady Wildcats defeated Hopkins and Kelloggsville in their season opener last month.

Both the Wayland boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams will be back in action Tuesday afternoon at the Grand Rapids South Christian athletic complex in the first O-K Gold Conference jamboree of the season.
