Caledonia, a Division 1 school, pinned the first loss of the season on the Wayland girls’ basketball team Tuesday evening.
The homestanding Fighting Scots prevailed 54-47, lowering Wayland’s overall record this season to 3-1.
The Wildcats fell behind in the early going, trailing by as many as 16 points, and their comeback was the classic too little, too late. A lot of bench players saw action in the first couple of periods that made the comeback even more difficult.
Wayland managed only one three-point field goal in that, that by Rae Stallard.
Senior Harmony Laker again led the offensive effort with 16 points, including six free throws. Addie Sikorsky scored eight points and Izzy Johnson dropped in six.
Allegan 22 Martin 19
It also wasn’t a particularly good night for the Martin girls, as their offensive troubles continued in a 22-19 defeat at the hands of Allegan.
Coach Ben Schipper said, “Tonight was another major offensive struggle for us. Allegan really packed their zone in tonight and swarmed the ball anytime we had high post touches. We struggled to even get shots off and just weren’t making good basketball decisions.
“We lost way too many possessions to turnovers. Maggie Jager and Marybeth Ritchie had some aggressive moments in the post tonight which I was pleased with. We wanted to attack Allegan’s interior defense and we capitalized on it several times, but it just wasn’t enough.”
The Clippers managed to make only 6 of 18 free throw attempts.
Maggie Jager and Alley both led Martin offensively with five points apiece.
Martin next will play Saugatuck.

We need to regroup and figure out a way to stay consistent throughout a whole game.”
Cruz Hitzler led Hopkins in scoring with 24 points.
