The Wayland girls’ varsity soccer team opened their season Tuesday evening with a 3-0 loss to Grand Rapids West Catholic.

Despite a game-high 20 shots and 16 on goal, the Wildcats fell short on a wet field on cool temperatures. The score was 1-0 at halftime even though the Wildcats saw the majority of the scoring chances fall to them.

“The West Catholic keeper made two or three outstanding saves to keep her team in control of the lead,” commented coach Ben Sleeman.

The second half saw much of the same play with both teams having scoring chances and Cougars’ attacking players capitalizing on their two free kicks to score twice and pull away late in the half.

Lilly Bollinger made 11 saves in her first ever game in net for Wayland.

The girls go into spring break week and return with a conference matchup against local rival and 4 time conference champs Middleville Thornapple Kellogg Tuesday, April 10.
