The Wayland varsity boys’ golf team didn’t have its best day Monday at a tournament at the Egypt Valley course in Grand Rapids.

“It was a great day to play golf,” said coach Chris Drew. “The course was in great shape and we were playing hard.”

The Wildcats wound up 15th in a 22-yeam field. Forest Hills Northern carded a team score of 311 to win it and Rockford was two strokes back. Wayland finished with a 360.

“This was a great early test for our players,” Drew said. “This really gives them some motivation to improve their game. We want to be playing our best golf in May, and this shows we have some work to do. We have a lot of talent, but haven’t learned to score yet. But it is coming.”

Wayland was led by senior Jake Omness, who will be playing golf at Davenport next year, with an 82. Other scores for Wayland were sophomore Rory Myers with 88, Robert Mucci 89, Carson Sevigny 101, and Rory Bessinger with 107.

Wayland starts league play this Wednesday at Quail Ridge.
